Indirect Contact (Incidental Food Contact)

NSF® H1 “indirect contact” (also called incidental food contact) refers to lubricants used on food‑processing equipment where unavoidable, brief, trace‑level contact with food may occur. The key regulatory limit is ≤10 ppm of lubricant in the finished food, as defined under FDA 21 CFR 178.3570.

An NSF H1 lubricant is a lubricant approved for use on food‑processing equipment where unavoidable, brief, trace‑level contact with food may occur, up to 10 ppm, using FDA‑permitted ingredients and NSF‑verified formulation.

Acceptable as a lubricant with incidental food contact for use in and around food processing areas. For example: If used as an anti-rust film, the compound must be removed from the equipment surface by washing or wiping as required to leave the surface effectively free of any substance which could be transferred to the food being processed. The amount used should be the minimum required to accomplish the desired technical effect on the equipment. Meets regulatory require-ments including FDA 21 CFR for appropriate use, ingredient and labeling review.
